Another island located in the Aur cluster is Pualu Dayang which is actually the second largest island located there. The Village of White Sand or Kampung Pasir Putih is a village located on the island, it faces Pulau Aur and it separated by the Dayang Channel. In the village visitors can also find the popular Dayang Island Resort, the resort is privately owned and operated where guests can experience living on the beach. One of the main features that you would find on the island is communal living, this will give an opportunity for the city dwellers to relax and unwind.
The entire island is set in traditional Malaysian heritage that will promise a cozy and rustic environment for all that comes to the island. The island is an ideal place for holiday makers as well as divers and anglers. So if you want to get away from city life then why don’t you just drop on by and bask in the rich tropical beauty that the island has to offer.
The islands in the Aur cluster are frequently visited by foreigners as well as diving enthusiasts, as mentioned earlier the islands here still maintain its rustic charm so it will not be surprising to find that there are only radio phones here. The islands have about 300 settlers, so basically everyone knows each other making it a safe place for your holidays. The island gained prominence in the April of 1999 when a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F-111 bomber crashed into its peak during a Five Power Defense Exercise. Since the aircraft crashed in an area that is quite difficult to access the RAAF left most of the wreckage there. However a memorial has been set up in dedication of that particular event.
There are several underwater pinnacles located on the east side of Pulau Aur that rises 30m from the sea floor. These pinnacles are also situated near the surface of hard coral growth that includes undamaged table corals. Visitors can travel to these pinnacles if they want to, it will take about half an hour to reach there. Another similar place located northeast of Pulau Dayang called ‘Rayner’s Rock’ has a 33m high submerged rock where you may have the opportunity to see boulder corals, whale sharks as well as large manta rays. There are also a surprising large number of juvenile fishes that can be found this far offshore.
Currently there are no dive centers located on the island so this means that all dive trips on the island must be pre-arranged. The packages for the dive trips usually include land transfers from Singapore/Kuala Lumpur to the jetty that is located in Mersing. They will also include boat transfer to the resorts located on the island and you can find such packages from the dive operators. It is best that you shop around first before you sign up for the packages; this is because you may be able to find the best package at the best price.
Another type of diving that you can choose to do while you are at the island is the ship wreck dives that are scheduled during the weekends. The boat will bring you to the ship wreck site that are located off of the South China Sea where you will have the chance to literally see pieces of history lying within recreational depths. At the same time you will be able to see more than 50 sharks in that one dive as well as sand rays and other type of aquatic marine life. So if you have an underwater camera this would be the best time to take it out and use it.
The best time to go for these diving activities are during the months from April to June as the waters are not only clear but calm as well. The inner islands such as Pulau Pemanggil are popular especially amongst non-divers so it is advisable that you stay away from these islands during the weekends and public holidays as it will be packed and crowded.
The channel located between that of Pulau Dayang and Pulau Aur is rich with coral reefs and since they are located in relatively shallow waters you will have the opportunity to see them up close. An interesting thing that you may want to take note of is that there is a sunken aircraft located at the middle of the channel that is wrapped in fishing net. There you will also have the chance to dive amongst the items that date back as far as the Ming dynasty. So make your way to these islands as you will not be disappointed with the amount of activities that you will enjoy.
